I’m looking for an easily portable laptop or netbook to use for website development. How well do they work for this purpose? Should I just get a laptop instead of a netbook?

Yes, of course they do. I have an Asus EEE and I’ve used it with Rational Software Architect, a piece of dev software that’s waaaaaaaaay heavier on the CPU that what you want to do.
The screen is small, but it’s ideal for a lightweight, cheap solution for dev work. You can install the LAMP/xampp stack and do your dev work using the editor of your choice.
You should probably get a notebook. Netbooks are fantastic for just using the internet. They have small screens and they do not have alot of processor power. Check out my article on netbooks vs notebooks, it goes into more detail between the two. http://www.tallmikesblog.com/netbookvsno…
Consider maybe a USB jump drive with a Linux OS. And you can symbolic link to/from the HDD any apps.
