Laptop Memory – When Just Enough is Never Enough

It Just Keeps Getting Better

Unlike before, the physical size of a laptop is not the only issue under consideration by the consumer. Today, manufacturers are constantly producing new models, the specifications becoming higher and higher. For some time, it has not been unusual for a new laptop to be outperformed by another, newly released model, within months of buy. Many people see upgrading their laptop memory as a excellent way to improve computer performance, keeping their machine updated and stop it becoming obsolete.

Random Access Memory

Is their a difference between a laptop memory and a desktop computer memory?  Like most of the components within a laptop, it’s simply a physicality. Most people are familiar with the term ‘Random Access Memory’, or RAM for small. A term which refers to the size of memory.  A unit used by all the manufacturers to grade one component with another. Irrelevant of whether it is for a laptop or desktop. The RAM module for a laptop is much smaller, physically. Therefore, they tend to be more expensive than those manufactured for a desktop. All the same performance, squeezed into a much smaller unit.

Functionality

The size of the laptop memory is not the only difference, they are also designed to consume less power. Another vital feature for laptop users. A RAM module carries out the same job, regardless of computer model. So, what exactly is the function of ‘Random Access Memory’?  What does it do?  In the simplest of terms! The RAM module is used to temporarily store vital data needed by the processor, in order to complete a command.  By boosting the RAM memory on a computer, the amount of data which can be stored will be considerably greater. Therefore, the performance of the computer substantially improved.

Do You Need More?

When your computer starts to slow down, it’s usually trying to tell you something!  No matter how large the processor, if your machine doesn’t have enough RAM, it will be sluggish.  Certainly not performing at it‘s best. With some programs, it may even struggle to complete the task at all. Sometimes, if you start to use a more updated version of a particular software, the problem will arise. This is when many people will look for a way to improve their machines performance. Adding more memory is an simple solution to the problem. Compared to replacing the computer, usually the most cost effective one too.

What’s Too Much?

Most manufacturers, retailers and computer users agree, there can never be too much! Especially with regards to a laptop. Basic laptops usually have 256mb of RAM, giving an average performance for average tasks. Many of the new computers are supplied with new, larger operating systems. Windows Vista for example. Without enough RAM, even a new computer might be slow, due to the size of it’s platform. Before buying a new laptop memory, check out the computer manual. Most laptops have a limit as to how much RAM that particular model can handle. Could save disappointment. For most people, the improvement in their laptops performance makes the initial expense well worth it.

is 2 GB of memory excellent for a laptop?
i just recently bought a new white macbook but am coming across a few concerns like how surprisingly small the memory seems to be. i’m a complete noob with computers of any sort so i could be completely incorrect in my understanding but i’ve personally downloaded three systems only and already my computer is operating slower online even when my connection to the server is at full bars. i have msn messenger, yahoo messenger, and opera browser in my system now. is that really going to impact my system enough to slow it down? my main thing i want is a way to download music such as through torrent but i keep running across things i want with the size labeled as 4GB and more! is there something i’m greatly missing? am i just really an idiot behind a screen (please tell me i am cause learning is a fantastic option for me) or are laptops really that limited and i just burned up a butt load of money i shouldn’t have?

i will admit i severely jumped the gun on what i was doing, my pride is already hurt by coming across problems and things i’m not used to seeing since i’ve never had my own computer let alone a mac. so all the downloading and memory issues were someone else’s. so any help for me?

another thing is that my room mate has a laptop with libraries full of music and the bearshare program and can still run quicker than my practically virgin macbook when we are connected to the same server, i thought apples were boasted to have the quicker connections. what’s going on with my internet?

thats the RAM size, your hard drive size is going to be much larger. that is plenty of memory. Quite a lot really.

not sure with how to go about checking with a MAC, because i’ve never used one.

Yeah, that’s your RAM. You store your files on the hard drive. Your hard drive is likely over a hundred GB.

So you know the difference in ram memory and hard drive. Ram memory is only temporary and is cleared/emptied each time you turn off your lap top (Mac). The hard drive has no built in memory it is for storing your operating system and all programs, files, pictures, music etc.
The ram memory modules and the processor retrieve the needed operating system and files, program etc. as needed from the hard drive.
I will admit I have never used a Mac but the principals are the same as with all computers. The item you mentioned being 4 GB would be very large and most music files/songs are much smaller but video and movies do use large amounts of space as well as some software programs.
Internet traffic can effect the upload and download speeds as well as the Internet Service you use.
No pun intended but the Book line Computers for Dummies or Mac for Dummies is well worth the read to learn your lap tops operating system and is in a simple forward terms better understood for us non geeks.
Hope some of this is of helps

2 GB of memory is about standard and excellent enough for everyday activities, but it’s not a powerhouse. Check to see what is the maximum amount of memory your laptop can hold and you can add more memory. Memory is simple to add.

To find out your system’s specs, click on the apple symbol and on the menu, click on About this Mac. It will give the system’s memory. Click on the More Info button and you’ll get even more specs on your system.

Certainly the more applications you have open and running at the same time, the more memory is used, but you should be able to run those applications without a problem. If you’re talking about your network connection being slow, that has to do with your internet connection speed, not necessarily your computer. If you get a quicker internet service, your connection will be quicker.
