My sister bought a new Gateway ML3109 in May of 2008 (I reckon) for $399 from Best Buy and I’ve used it quite a bit, including the fall semester at the University. I reckon it’s quick enough, especially if you get rid of unnecessary programs and tweak the settings. I’ve never played any games on it, but it looks like there is plenty of RAM (depending on what your game requires) – the link for all the specs is below. It has a nice wide and clear screen, built-in wi-fi, the battery lasts for a couple of hours if the screen brightness is turned down, and overall it’s a nice laptop. We haven’t had a single problem with it yet.

Depending on what size screen your looking for the new Mini’s all under 8″ screen have really come down in price – well under 500.00 I reckon… you can do some Research at both cnet and amazon.. they both have brilliant product reviews… and cnet give you user and editorial reviews. best of luck…

Look into buying an acer or compaq.
Personally, I like compaqs over acer though since they are made by HP.
Best Buy also has some really reasonable prices on Laptops.
