My cousin came over the other day and used her apple laptop. What I couldnt know is she got on the internet and she doesnt have internet on her laptop. Apperantly she said that she was able to get on the net because someone in our apartment must of had internet? What I want to know is how do I get my laptop todo this? and do I have to pay?

Your cousin’s laptop has a wireless internet adapter. She was simply leaching off someone’s unsecured wireless internet signal in or near your apartment.
The internet is not ON her laptop. She has a program (browser) and a built-in wireless card that allows her to grab someone’s wireless signal (nextdoor, maybe) and connect TO the internet that way.
ANYONE with a wireless card/antenna and in the vacinity of an UNsecured wireless router can get on the internet.
Here’s the potential problem for you: if they detect that you are on their network AND you have folder / files shared, then they may be able to not only see them, but MAY be able to copy, delete, go…. or worse, access other parts of the disc.

HA! she connected to some dumb@@ses unprotected network. You can do it too with either a built in wireless adapter, or a network card that will go into your PCMCIA slot. Tell me where your apartments are so I can use the free net too! heheeee
Nearly every new computer these days comes with a search engine for using the internet, and either a wireless card or a setup for a wireless card. Your cousin could get on the internet because there was an unsecured wireless network in the immediate area that she could use. If you don’t password encrypt your wireless network anyone can use it if they have the right kind of wireless card. So for you to do this, check to see if you have a wireless card on your computer and under your connection settings, check to see if you can connect to any unsecured networks. And if you get on one, no you will not have to pay because you are in effect free riding on their internet. For everyone’s sake though, please get/pay for your own router if you are plotting on using internet on your computer a lot. It clogs that person’s network if you are downloading a lot of stuff on it or are using it all the time.
Buy a wireless card.
