A team of scientists at IBM Research in San Jose is tackling what they call the future of the all-electric vehicle. They want to make the next generation battery that will be lighter and lasts longer. They are trying to unlock a new technology.(ibm ThinkPad T42 battery)

IBM researcher Sally Swanson is climbing what she calls the Mt. Everest of energy. She’s working on IBM’s Battery 500 Project.

The goal is to build a car battery that will go 500 miles before needing a recharge. Swanson says the battery would revolutionize the all-electric vehicle market and do away with many people’s recharge anxiety.(ibm ThinkPad R50 battery)

“We can go, ‘Oh, thank goodness, I can get back home, if I have to, I can get to my son’s house in L.A.’ Whatever,” says Swanson.

Right now, Tesla’s pricey Roadster is the only all-electric vehicle in production. Its lithium ion battery has a range of about 200 miles. IBM’s Girish Gopalakrishnan says pound for pound a lithium air battery could be seven times more efficient. The trick is to make use of something light and easily available — air.(ibm ThinkPad 600X battery)

“During the discharge of the battery, you have lithium ions going in and reacting with air in the atmosphere to form a product and then release external energy, which could be used to drive your car or any other devise,” says Gopalakrishnan.

The benefits of metal-air batteries have been known for decades. They power million of small devises like hearing aids, but the challenge has been making them larger and rechargeable.

IBM has set aside another two years to test the science behind its Battery 500 Project. Swanson says the recent oil disaster in the gulf just reaffirms the urgency of their work.

“Hopefully, we will get this to be the equivalent to gasoline and do away with the need for so much gas in the country,” says Swanson.

The IBM Research labs may not resemble Mt. Everest, but the journey could result in a powerful view. The Battery 500 Project is in its first year of research. IBM hopes to have a laboratory sized prototype by 2012, but says an actual electric vehicle sized demo battery could be 10 to 15 years away.

How Does A IBM ThinkPad T43 battery Work

We may use laptop batteries everyday and wanna to buy batteries online some times. But most of us may not familiar with their working process.In fact, A laptop battery works in much the same way as batteries that go into portable CD players, remote controls, and shower radios. Just like the batteries used in these household items, laptop batteries come in different sizes based upon the size of the laptop. Laptop batteries but, contain within them complex charging circuitry that works together with a laptop’s hardware. Take my own IBM ThinkPad T43 battery for example.

Inside each battery there are also positive and negative electrodes. In order to power your laptop, a chemical reaction occurs with both the positive and negative electrodes. This reaction flows in a specific way in order to discharge energy. Plugging in your adapter reverses this process in order to recharge your battery. The process of reversing the chemical reaction occurs for both positive and negative electrodes. To make both the discharge of energy as well as recharge process work, this process must be exact. If not, then a small-circuit may occur. This process is basically the same whether your battery runs on Lithium Ion (Li-Ion), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), or Lithium Polymer (Li-Poly).

This process is then regulated by hardware within your laptop. The hardware in your laptop ensures that the cells are functioning to their capacity. This is what also allows you to check the life left on your laptop battery before it needs to be recharged. A battery symbol is typically showed on the right corner of your task bar. This symbol graphically shows how much energy has been discharged as well as how much is left. Although a laptop battery is rechargeable, it does have a limited life span. A typical battery usually lasts for about 500-700 charges before it will no longer be capable of recharging, and a replacement is necessary. The amount of charges can vary depending on the main use of your laptop. Some functions require more energy then others. Using functions such as a DVD player or using the brigh test screen setting can drain the battery quicker, thus requiring it to be charged sooner. The more often you need to charge your battery, the sooner the battery will be drained of its life span.
