Toshiba A505-S6030 – A Fantastic All-Around Laptop

Hello everyone! This my first product review EVER, so here goes… something! 

I’m the type of person that prefers to hold off on technology buys, simply because something better is always just around the corner. Well, my ancient laptop finally died, and I was forced to make a purchasing choice; I chose the Toshiba A505-S6030. 

I bought my laptop from a major electronics store in the San Francisco Bay Area, rather than online. This turned out to be a excellent choice, as upon opening the laptop and turning it on, I learned a lit pixel right smack-dab in the middle of the screen. Since the store I bought it from had a 30-day satisfaction guarantee, exchanging it was no problem, and I had the second laptop within an hour. You can see how purchasing this online, would have made for a rather annoying buying experience. The laptop was on-sale for 9 (no rebates required). 

The machine comes with Windows 7 Home Premium already installed, and I was pleased to see very small bloatware; mostly proprietary Toshiba software to utilize the custom Toshiba media buttons. Since I had a license for Windows 7 Professional through my college’s MSDN academic alliance program, I did end up re-partitioning and formatting the drive for my own custom install. All the drivers and software needed for a custom install and readily available for download at Toshiba’s website. After getting the laptop loaded with software, it was time to see what it could do. 

Let me start off by saying that this machine is a fantastic value for the cost. The Intel i7 720qm processor is fantastic! 4 cores clocked at 1.6 ghz with 8 processing threads make for a very quick machine. This machine also has turbo boost technology, and can increase the speed of each core independently, up to 2.8 ghz. I should note, that you cannot have all 4 cores operating at 2.8 ghz, as there would be too much heat produced. You might get 2 cores at 2.4 or 2.2 ghz. The machine also has 4 gigs of RAM, which is certainly acceptable (although I plot on upgrading to 8 gigs around the end of the year), a decent on-board video card, the Nvidia 310m, and a 500 gig hard drive for plenty of storage space. Other nice additions are the built-in web cam with microphone, 3 USB ports, wireless N networking, dual-layer DVD writer with mark-flash (similar to light-scribe), fire-wire, eSATA connection, 10/100/1000 RJ45 network connection, VGA, an SD/XD/MMC memory card reader, a touch-pad with multi-touch capabilities, a modem (who even uses one anymore), and HDMI output. Also, the harman/kardon speakers are the best I’ve ever heard on a laptop. Quite impressive. 

Now, getting back to the Nvidia 310m… this laptop is NOT a gaming machine, nor did I buy it for that reason… but, being a casual gamer, I had to try out a few games just to see how they would perform; and I was quite surprised. While you won’t find me logged on to World of Warcraft, you might see me on Runes of Magic from time to time (a free 3d MMORPG). With most of the graphic settings on medium-high to high, it was running very smoothly! Incredible! Dragon Age: Origins also ran pretty smooth with graphics at medium settings. This graphics card is listed as an entry level, 3rd class mobile video card, so perhaps the i7 was doing the brunt of the work, but nevertheless, this machine can run 3D applications honestly well. Just remember, if you are primarily interested in a gaming laptop, this isn’t the one for you. Also, don’t plot on playing any games with the touch-pad, invest in a USB mouse. 

Now, this machine has a lot of power under the hood, and its simple to see where Toshiba made some sacrifices to keep the price low. First, Toshiba opted for a DVD writer combo drive, rather than a Blue Ray reader/DVD writer combo. Also, while the keyboard does have a full numerical pad on the right, it also has a somewhat cheap plastic look and feel. The LCD show is bright and colorful, and overall looks nice, but is only 1366 by 768 resolution… so if you have any applications that require a window height of 800 pixels, you’re out of luck (or you’ll be moving the window up and down a lot). The battery is 6 cells instead of 9, so you will likely get 1 1/2 to 2 hours of battery life. Lack of Bluetooth was not a deal breaker for me, but still a minor inconvenience, and the 500 gig hard drive spins as 5400 RPM instead of 7200. Finally, while the appearance and design of the laptop is very nice, it will collect fingerprints and smudge marks quite effortlessly. 

Overall, I reckon the A505-S6030 is a tremendous value! You get fantastic processing power, excellent video capabilities, and overall awesome performance and portability, all for a fantastic price. If you’ve been waiting for a laptop able to do bit of everything, this might be the one for you. I am pleased to say that I won’t need a desktop machine for the next few years. For those of you who are in the graphic design business, a nice wide-screen LCD monitor and a USB mouse would be a fantastic companion for this laptop. 

The windows experience index rating for this laptop is as follows: 

Processor: 6.9 
Memory: 5.9 
Graphics: 4.7 
Gaming Graphics: 6.0 
Primary Hard Disk: 5.8 

Also, one final note. If you buy this laptop, be sure to correctly break in the battery to get the best possible life. This would entail: 

1. Charging the battery completely with the laptop off. The charge light will change from orange to white when charged. 
2. Using the laptop until you drain the battery completely. 
3. Removing the battery from the laptop for 30 minutes or more, then again charging to full while the laptop is off. 

I recommend doing this the first 3 times you use the battery, and then at least once a month to keep the battery in excellent condition and increase longevity. By customizing the eco power-saving mode settings, I am getting about 2 1/2 hours per charge. Not terrible for such a powerful laptop.

Fantastic, light-weight, powerful machine for daily use.

I bought the U505-2008 model. Seems to be similar to the one described. I like it. Have it had it for about a month. The only negative is the small battery life, but when you look at the lightweight portables with longer battery life (e.g., HP, Dell), their batteries are twice as heavy. I wanted a lightweight laptop above the netbook size for everyday use that was quick. This is it. The screen is bright, it is quick, simple to set up, 500 GB HD, 4MB, i3 intel core. Is it perfect? No, but for the price and the features, as well as the weight, I couldn’t find much better. Also, Toshiba has reputation for being durable. I took it on a recent trip to Spain, used local outlets, had no problems with it, works like a dream, especially compared to the clunky Dell Latitude I was using before.

I also have an HP DV4t, half a dozen older Toshiba, Sony and HP notebooks, and a whole gaggle of netbooks. So I’m kind of addicted to cool portable hardware. 

Among the myriad laptops & netbooks I’ve owned and used, this one is not the best, but certainly above-average. 

Stylish, Core i3 is quick, memory & HDD are roomy. The screen is bright, color saturation is excellent but mildly washed out relative to the better panels out there. The 8″ 1600×900 panel on Sony Vaio P-series is the worst color I’ve ever seen; this one is above average, just not the best. Beware that this unit (Amazon’s, specifically) does not come with a backlit keyboard, which is part of the standard U505-S2005 build spec on Toshiba’s website. I bought & installed the backlit keyboard separately, but it cost another . So really this isn’t a fantastic deal, it’s a cut-rate edition for a cut-rate price. If the backlit keyboard, bluetooth and slot-loading DVD don’t really matter to you, then save yourself maybe 0 and snag one of these. Overall it’s a very stylish case wrapped around some respectable hardware. But, if you don’t care about the relatively compact 13″ LCD or the fashionable presentation of the dark brown case, you might be just as well served with a standard 15.4″ unit from HP or Acer, with similar hardware, for a couple hundred bucks less. That’s right of any laptop that charges a premium for its design. 

If you do care about the style and compactness, U505 is a fantastic option.

I ordered this item to show 18.4-inch, because I have poor eyesight. Unfortunately, this system shows only two possible solutions for the video of his “native mode” which makes many signs are too small for me to read something on the screen, and 800,600 system. So, the huge screen is useless for me. It seems that J & R will not accept the return of the computer after installation has been developed, so I stuck with it. This can be useful as a second computer, if this is compatible with my 30-inch, but not portable. This can be a excellent laptop at a excellent price, but check the specifications carefully to know what to order.

fantastic laptop

I have had this laptop for about a month and I like it. It has all the features I need plus some. I replaced an HP laptop that was going down hill quick and this laptop does not have the hardware conflicts that HP computers seem to have. I play DDO quite a bit and the computer has a better show and smoother video than my last one. I like the size of the screen and the full size number pad, it makes things simpler. If you are looking at the pictures that come with the description it may seem that it has an HDMI output it DOES NOT. It has a covered port where one can be installed but it is not there. It would have been nice to be able to hook the laptop up to my TV but it lacks the port to do so. Other than that the laptop is a fantastic buy. If you are looking for a backpack for it I did find one that worked. Targus XL Backpack Designed for 17 Inch Notebooks TXL617 was the only backpack that would seem to work for this laptop. I can fit this laptop plus my older one in the same backpack.

Very nice laptop

This laptop is very nice. Like the huge screen, which is not overly reflective like some. The speakers are excellent for a laptop. The keyboard is comfortable with excellent sized keys. 

The only thing I don’t like is there are not enough USB ports, only four, and they are located two on either side and none in the back where they should be. My ancient Dell had 6 USB ports and 4 of them were in the back out of the way. Now I have to watch out for cables sticking out the sides, plus I had to buy a USB hub to get extra ports. In all fairness to Toshiba, I couldn’t locate another brand of laptop (Dell included) that had USB ports in the back.

Fantastic PC But A Small Huge To Carry Daily

I bought this PC to use in my Living Room of my home. It is what I really wanted, large screen and large keyboard. Now the size of it would seem to make it hard to carry on a daily basis is the way I see it (going thru airports, etc.). As a rule I don’t travel so this works out perfect in my use requirements. Now I will be taking a vacation soon and expect to take this Laptop with me and seeing as I am driving I don’t see any problems on the size of it. Fantastic picture and simple to use. The only down side would be having to carry on a daily basis when flying.

I bought this for my son’s birthday 10 years. My only problem now is that I want too! This laptop is so light compared to the Sony Vaio, what we have. To buy this notebook is portability, is the fact that the issue of hard drive is “parked” (essential when the property boy 10 years!) And ‘speed and memory size, and low cost . I tested a couple of weeks, and could not find a better version of this computer for the price, as in fact slightly more expensive computers HAD less memory, functions, etc., Against just for me, I’m not used to the touch pad and very although, but my son uses it more and this is the first small problem, but now likes it and is used to this feature. Overall I am very satisfied with my buy.

Incredible laptop. Nice and small. Toshiba makes some excellent laptops at affordable prices. I just got it, so I’m still tinkering around with it. The specs and battery life is what drew my attention. Although most users get 6-7 hrs., you can get up to 9 hrs. with the right setting. All in all, it’s a steal for it’s price. lol

The first Satellite that arrived had a defective “delete” key that either didn’t work or locked down, deleting the whole document. Toshiba support advised me that there are no service locations in New York city (huh?) so it would be quicker to return the unit…. which I did and THREE WEEKS later, I got a function Satellite. Three weeks is a long time to wait! 

It is a nice PC: the CPU is quick, the screen has sharp resolution and bright, clear color, the keyboard is MUCH better than any net book. Quite light weight, and the battery life is acceptable. 

The pointing device (touch pad, whatever) is a complete piece of crap. If there is a way to turn off the click “feature” on the pad and use only the buttons, it is a secret. I learned to avoid rolling over ads and hyperlinks on web pages, lest a random, unwanted “virtual click” send me off to la-la land. If you buy this PC, save yourself some agita and buy an external mouse from the get-go. 

There is a typical bushel basket of free bundled software preinstalled. I have not yet tried to clean up the 90% that is useless… 

Overall, I find the T135-S1305 to be a pretty excellent PC at a competitive price.

Fantastic form factor, but keyboard and mouse are dreadful

I like the size and weight of this laptop. Battery life is excellent also, which makes it a fantastic laptop for carrying around. In theory, if you want an iPad, here is a device about the same size, but with full Windows (now THERE’S an “apps” collection) and a real keyboard, and USB (not to mention HDMI), BlueTooth and WiFi and MUCH more disk space. Sadly, like the iPad, there is no optical drive on this, but that is why it is so thin. I like the trade-off as I find myself using CD/DVD less and less. 

So, I bought one and I’ll keep it, but I have two serious problems with this laptop, both related to input. First, as was mentioned, the touch pad is abysmal. The buttons are clumsy and when released, the button disconnects BEFORE the click, so you can reckon you are holding down the button but it has released electrically. The result is that you often “let go” of scroll bars or mouse drags. The two buttons are on one huge button bar which makes them hard to find. And finally, the whole touch pad is an epic fail and Toshiba had to recall it. The bug is that if you push that single “button bar” near the middle, the touch pad stops working until you reboot, hibernate or even just sleep the thing for a moment. Toshiba will replace for free, but that means sending it in for 2-4 weeks. Blech. 

I am also picky about keyboards and this one is a loser. many of the keys will not register if pushed near the edges, so drop-outs are VERY common when you go back and re-read what you typed. I have had to add-in dropped letters three times already in this post. 

One more small nit: Toshiba, PLEASE bring back the dial-type volume knob mounted on the side. NOBODY likes to adjust the volume by holding down the FN key and looking for the buttons that do volume. NOBODY.

Toshiba T135-S1305

This lap top has met all my expectations. The battery life was one of my key selling points and has lasted a three hour drive while watching movies with lots of power to spare (the pasangers where watching the movie). This lap top is the perfect size. It is thin and small enough to fit in a backpack or under a car seat. The 13 inch screen is perfect for web serfing and watching movies. The resolution is very crisp. I have not tried the eco mode yet whitch will prolong the battery life. I did about three months of research and am very pleased with my buy.

So Far So Fantastic

Toshiba Satellite A505-S6004 TruBrite 16.0-Inch Laptop (Black/Silver) 

After several months researching various options available at Amazon.com I chose to stick with Toshiba. A friend of mine had seriously recommended that I should buy an Acer, but the more I researched the more I was impressed with Toshiba, especially in terms of reliability. Since my own experience with Toshiba was so positive once I had chose to stick with the brand I knew, it was a matter of which one. My reason for buying a new one was that I’d had my Toshiba Satellite since 2003 or 2004 — can’t remember which and technology had certainly went on. But that machine is still working, all be it slow. 

Well, I have not regretted my choice at all. Many of the negatives reported by other reviews I have found not faults at all. The keyboard, for example is not too loud for me — in fact it is perfect for my touch. One thing that does drive me nuts is the touchpad: when I am surfing it is so sensitive that it keeps scrolling down the page and back up again at what seems like warp speed. (I reckon somebody in the reviews may have found out how to fix this, so I much look and see if I can find it.)This machine boots up so quick — quite an improvement that the 10 to 15 minutes it took my ancient machine! 

Back to deciding which one to go with. Initially, I plotted to go with a 15.6 inch screen — mainly because that was what I was used to and also because there were some really excellent deals price-wise. But, I couldn’t find one in the price range with 4 USB ports and I also wanted an HDMI port. It still amazes me what I can get for around 0 considering I paid 00 for my ancient and antiquated machine. The computer looks gorgeous, but fingerprints are an annoying problem. Also it’s lighter than my ancient laptop, which is a pleasant surprise. 

I’ve had the machine since April 10th so I am still on a learning curve as how things work and what I can do. But so far it’s all worked like magic. I’ve talked to my son on Skype and he lives in Korea. Some people have complained about the quality of the webcam and my son has told me on one occasion that the picture was not that fantastic and then the next time that it was really clear! My son in Italy said it was fantastic. So what can I tell you — is it the Internet connection or is it the camera. I really like having it and it’s worked seamlessly. And it’s absolutely right that the wireless connection works right out of the box. I often download tv programs that I’ve missed and the quality of the picture is as if watching the tv. I should add that I’m American and had the machine delivered to my mother’s, but I live in the UK and have been using it here since the end of April. No problems have arisen as a result of being in a different country. 

I am going to have to replace a lot of software, which is an expensive negative. I’ve used Microsoft Office Professional 2000 for years and Adobe 5 and Paint Shop Pro 9 — all will have to be replaced. But, I am experimenting with Open Office software which is free and so far has been fantastic. Having said that I am using the trial version of Office Professional 2007 mostly because I really needed Outlook. So the question is will I just buy Outlook and go with Open Office. 

I do like Windows 7, the software that comes with the computer has been adequate so far. I use the movie maker software a lot and was pleased that it could improve the quality of some of my small homemade videos — the kind you can make with either a cell phone or digital camera. Also a nice small scanning/faxing program that has made it very simple for me to scan and email. I was able to make a DVD of some photographs for my husband, but was not able to figure out how to find/use the lable/flash program that I thought was part of the package — the one that is supposed to print directly onto the disc. 

Glad to say my ancient 2179 HP printer was no problem to install and works perfectly. I was sure I would have to get a new one so that was a nice surprise. 

All in all, with 6 weeks ownership in hand I am thrilled with this laptop.

Just got it and like it..First time user of Toshiba and its fantastic. Always bought dell with their small hard drives and dumb graphics. I turned to Toshiba mainly because it was a larger hard drive. I got 640GB and 4GB ram. I didn’t even know the keyboard lights up. Its fantastic. The mini touch screen music buttons comes in handy too. I like Windows 7. Another well done job Microsoft. Well the camera is not so excellent but what the heck.. You dont need it buy an external web cam. Shuts down quick and boots up quick to. Toshiba face recognition is fantastic.

LCD SCREEN DIED AFTER ONLY 8 MONTHS

I bought my Toshiba in August of 2009. It is really an A505-S6966. Everything was fine until a coouple of days ago when I turned it on and nothing but vertical lines appeared on the screen. I went to their website and called the number they gave to find out that it might cost between 5-5 to fix the LCD screen problem that I apparently have. I refused to give them a credit card number and will have to call back to get in touch with a case worker during ‘normal business hours’. 

I find it sad that Toshiba will not stand behind it’s product. As anyone can imagine,I am very dissapointed with Toshiba. I own two of their laptops but will not buy a 3rd.

So Far So Fantastic

Toshiba Satellite A505-S6004 TruBrite 16.0-Inch Laptop (Black/Silver) 

After several months researching various options available at Amazon.com I chose to stick with Toshiba. A friend of mine had seriously recommended that I should buy an Acer, but the more I researched the more I was impressed with Toshiba, especially in terms of reliability. Since my own experience with Toshiba was so positive once I had chose to stick with the brand I knew, it was a matter of which one. My reason for buying a new one was that I’d had my Toshiba Satellite since 2003 or 2004 — can’t remember which and technology had certainly went on. But that machine is still working, all be it slow. 

Well, I have not regretted my choice at all. Many of the negatives reported by other reviews I have found not faults at all. The keyboard, for example is not too loud for me — in fact it is perfect for my touch. One thing that does drive me nuts is the touchpad: when I am surfing it is so sensitive that it keeps scrolling down the page and back up again at what seems like warp speed. (I reckon somebody in the reviews may have found out how to fix this, so I much look and see if I can find it.)This machine boots up so quick — quite an improvement that the 10 to 15 minutes it took my ancient machine! 

Back to deciding which one to go with. Initially, I plotted to go with a 15.6 inch screen — mainly because that was what I was used to and also because there were some really excellent deals price-wise. But, I couldn’t find one in the price range with 4 USB ports and I also wanted an HDMI port. It still amazes me what I can get for around 0 considering I paid 00 for my ancient and antiquated machine. The computer looks gorgeous, but fingerprints are an annoying problem. Also it’s lighter than my ancient laptop, which is a pleasant surprise. 

I’ve had the machine since April 10th so I am still on a learning curve as how things work and what I can do. But so far it’s all worked like magic. I’ve talked to my son on Skype and he lives in Korea. Some people have complained about the quality of the webcam and my son has told me on one occasion that the picture was not that fantastic and then the next time that it was really clear! My son in Italy said it was fantastic. So what can I tell you — is it the Internet connection or is it the camera. I really like having it and it’s worked seamlessly. And it’s absolutely right that the wireless connection works right out of the box. I often download tv programs that I’ve missed and the quality of the picture is as if watching the tv. I should add that I’m American and had the machine delivered to my mother’s, but I live in the UK and have been using it here since the end of April. No problems have arisen as a result of being in a different country.

Toshiba A505 Laptop

The laptop is fine. The screen is bright and right with excellent definition. The keyboard is full sized and adequate. There are plenty of USB connections and the wireless works well and has fantastic range. I did not like the mouse pad scrolling feature and had to turn it off. The webcam is slow and barely usable but it was advertised as a 1.3 mp camera so you get what you pay for. So far I’m very satisfied with the computer as it has lived up to what I expected for the money paid (<0.00).

Fantastic Computer!!!

I recently bought this laptop to replace my Dell which stopped working after 2.5 years. This laptop has Fantastic features, very solid build, and is extremely quick. I have absolutely no complaints and would recommend this laptop to anyone. The sound is brilliant and I especially like the LED backlit keyboard! Toshiba has brilliant reliability reviews and this is an all around fantastic product. I opted for the AMD processor vs the slower Intel with the BlueRay player. I have a PS3 with BlueRay and I really don’t see myself needing a BlueRay player on my laptop. I would recommend a Square Guard warranty just for added protection. I bought the 3 year warranty for only 0.00! WHY WOULDN”T YOU GET THE 3 YEAR WARRANTY FOR ONLY 0????

Toshiba A505-S6030 – A Fantastic All-Around Laptop

Hello everyone! This my first product review EVER, so here goes… something! 

I’m the type of person that prefers to hold off on technology buys, simply because something better is always just around the corner. Well, my ancient laptop finally died, and I was forced to make a purchasing choice; I chose the Toshiba A505-S6030. 

I bought my laptop from a major electronics store in the San Francisco Bay Area, rather than online. This turned out to be a excellent choice, as upon opening the laptop and turning it on, I learned a lit pixel right smack-dab in the middle of the screen. Since the store I bought it from had a 30-day satisfaction guarantee, exchanging it was no problem, and I had the second laptop within an hour. You can see how purchasing this online, would have made for a rather annoying buying experience. The laptop was on-sale for 9 (no rebates required). 

The machine comes with Windows 7 Home Premium already installed, and I was pleased to see very small bloatware; mostly proprietary Toshiba software to utilize the custom Toshiba media buttons. Since I had a license for Windows 7 Professional through my college’s MSDN academic alliance program, I did end up re-partitioning and formatting the drive for my own custom install. All the drivers and software needed for a custom install and readily available for download at Toshiba’s website. After getting the laptop loaded with software, it was time to see what it could do. 

Let me start off by saying that this machine is a fantastic value for the cost. The Intel i7 720qm processor is fantastic! 4 cores clocked at 1.6 ghz with 8 processing threads make for a very quick machine. This machine also has turbo boost technology, and can increase the speed of each core independently, up to 2.8 ghz. I should note, that you cannot have all 4 cores operating at 2.8 ghz, as there would be too much heat produced. You might get 2 cores at 2.4 or 2.2 ghz. The machine also has 4 gigs of RAM, which is certainly acceptable (although I plot on upgrading to 8 gigs around the end of the year), a decent on-board video card, the Nvidia 310m, and a 500 gig hard drive for plenty of storage space. Other nice additions are the built-in web cam with microphone, 3 USB ports, wireless N networking, dual-layer DVD writer with mark-flash (similar to light-scribe), fire-wire, eSATA connection, 10/100/1000 RJ45 network connection, VGA, an SD/XD/MMC memory card reader, a touch-pad with multi-touch capabilities, a modem (who even uses one anymore), and HDMI output. Also, the harman/kardon speakers are the best I’ve ever heard on a laptop. Quite impressive. 

Now, getting back to the Nvidia 310m… this laptop is NOT a gaming machine, nor did I buy it for that reason… but, being a casual gamer, I had to try out a few games just to see how they would perform; and I was quite surprised. While you won’t find me logged on to World of Warcraft, you might see me on Runes of Magic from time to time (a free 3d MMORPG). With most of the graphic settings on medium-high to high, it was running very smoothly! Incredible! Dragon Age: Origins also ran pretty smooth with graphics at medium settings. This graphics card is listed as an entry level, 3rd class mobile video card, so perhaps the i7 was doing the brunt of the work, but nevertheless, this machine can run 3D applications honestly well. Just remember, if you are primarily interested in a gaming laptop, this isn’t the one for you. Also, don’t plot on playing any games with the touch-pad, invest in a USB mouse. 

Now, this machine has a lot of power under the hood, and its simple to see where Toshiba made some sacrifices to keep the price low. First, Toshiba opted for a DVD writer combo drive, rather than a Blue Ray reader/DVD writer combo. Also, while the keyboard does have a full numerical pad on the right, it also has a somewhat cheap plastic look and feel. The LCD show is bright and colorful, and overall looks nice, but is only 1366 by 768 resolution… so if you have any applications that require a window height of 800 pixels, you’re out of luck (or you’ll be moving the window up and down a lot). The battery is 6 cells instead of 9, so you will likely get 1 1/2 to 2 hours of battery life. Lack of Bluetooth was not a deal breaker for me, but still a minor inconvenience, and the 500 gig hard drive spins as 5400 RPM instead of 7200. Finally, while the appearance and design of the laptop is very nice, it will collect fingerprints and smudge marks quite effortlessly. 

Overall, I reckon the A505-S6030 is a tremendous value! You get fantastic processing power, excellent video capabilities, and overall awesome performance and portability, all for a fantastic price. If you’ve been waiting for a laptop able to do bit of everything, this might be the one for you. I am pleased to say that I won’t need a desktop machine for the next few years. For those of you who are in the graphic design business, a nice wide-screen LCD monitor and a USB mouse would be a fantastic companion for this laptop. 

The windows experience index rating for this laptop is as follows: 

Processor: 6.9 
Memory: 5.9 
Graphics: 4.7 
Gaming Graphics: 6.0 
Primary Hard Disk: 5.8 

Also, one final note. If you buy this laptop, be sure to correctly break in the battery to get the best possible life. This would entail: 

1. Charging the battery completely with the laptop off. The charge light will change from orange to white when charged. 
2. Using the laptop until you drain the battery completely. 
3. Removing the battery from the laptop for 30 minutes or more, then again charging to full while the laptop is off. 

I recommend doing this the first 3 times you use the battery, and then at least once a month to keep the battery in excellent condition and increase longevity. By customizing the eco power-saving mode settings, I am getting about 2 1/2 hours per charge. Not terrible for such a powerful laptop.

Toshiba has done a really excellent job with this laptop, its quick, the screen is very excellent in its clarity, wireless its brilliant, I get excellent reception, where my wife laptop does not( diff brand). I’ve yet to encounter any problems, but I’ve not had it for long so we’ll see. For now excellent.

Fantastic, light-weight, powerful machine for daily use.

I bought the U505-2008 model. Seems to be similar to the one described. I like it. Have it had it for about a month. The only negative is the small battery life, but when you look at the lightweight portables with longer battery life (e.g., HP, Dell), their batteries are twice as heavy. I wanted a lightweight laptop above the netbook size for everyday use that was quick. This is it. The screen is bright, it is quick, simple to set up, 500 GB HD, 4MB, i3 intel core. Is it perfect? No, but for the price and the features, as well as the weight, I couldn’t find much better. Also, Toshiba has reputation for being durable. I took it on a recent trip to Spain, used local outlets, had no problems with it, works like a dream, especially compared to the clunky Dell Latitude I was using before.

I also have an HP DV4t, half a dozen older Toshiba, Sony and HP notebooks, and a whole gaggle of netbooks. So I’m kind of addicted to cool portable hardware. 

Among the myriad laptops & netbooks I’ve owned and used, this one is not the best, but certainly above-average. 

Stylish, Core i3 is quick, memory & HDD are roomy. The screen is bright, color saturation is excellent but mildly washed out relative to the better panels out there. The 8″ 1600×900 panel on Sony Vaio P-series is the worst color I’ve ever seen; this one is above average, just not the best. Beware that this unit (Amazon’s, specifically) does not come with a backlit keyboard, which is part of the standard U505-S2005 build spec on Toshiba’s website. I bought & installed the backlit keyboard separately, but it cost another . So really this isn’t a fantastic deal, it’s a cut-rate edition for a cut-rate price. If the backlit keyboard, bluetooth and slot-loading DVD don’t really matter to you, then save yourself maybe 0 and snag one of these. Overall it’s a very stylish case wrapped around some respectable hardware. But, if you don’t care about the relatively compact 13″ LCD or the fashionable presentation of the dark brown case, you might be just as well served with a standard 15.4″ unit from HP or Acer, with similar hardware, for a couple hundred bucks less. That’s right of any laptop that charges a premium for its design. 

If you do care about the style and compactness, U505 is a fantastic option.
