I bought my first portable computer in 1996 for 00US (a Dell laptop with Intel P1-250MHz) then a second one in 2002 for 00US (a Dell inspiron laptop P4-2000MHz/512-ram) and now this is my third portable computer an Acer Aspire One AOP 531H with Intel Atom N270 (1600MHz) 1Gb Ram 160GB HDD an integrated webcam Bluetooth and WiFi for only 0US –> WoW! 

I just bought this last week on 11/9/09. It was on clearance and it cost me around 350USD. So far I am very pleased with the overall built features and performance. I reckon this small netbook is nicely built. I was a small bit concern with the 3-cell Li-On battery that came with it. But I was incorrect and I found the battery provides ample online time for me. I was using it with Bluetooth and WiFi on and it was running for maybe 1 hour and I still have 1.5hr left to go. I reckon the battery might last a small bit longer if I turn off Bluetooth and Wifi. 

The only negatives comments I have for this netbook are: (1) The left side of the netbook becomes considerably hot after 45min~60min use. (2) The built of the adapter feels cheap and the DC cord might not last a long time. 
My first Acer product was a PDA and this netbook is my second Acer product. So far I am pleased with ACER

When I first got this laptop, is was appalled at the setup time. Then, I was upset at how slow it ran. But, for some reason, ASUS chose to include a whole bunch of unnecessary junk. For instance, they included DVD player software, for a laptop that has no optical drive. Now, I know that they are paid by the software developers to include versions of software on their computers, but this case is a small bit excessive. So, I installed Ubutnu from a USB thumb drive (you can pick these up for next to nothing, and downloading Ubutnu is free and legal) and I finally had a laptop that preformed well enough to really surf the web/edit text documents/etc. If you’re interested, you can find instructions for installing Ubutnu at [...] *note:these instructions are probably not for beginning users. if you are somewhat familiar with Windows, and you have another computer to follow along with or you can print the instructions out, you should be fine. If you are not all that comfortable with computers, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS as you can cause your laptop to stop working, in which case you would have to pay a computer repair tech to fix the problems.

Pretty terrible experience

I had pretty low expectations but using this netbook was much worse than I thought. The main issue here is the system keeps stalling and cannot present even simple Youtube videos without getting stuck constantly. Even remove all memory resident apps, including anti-virus and using the Google Chrome didn’t get it to reasonable working condition. Also the keyboard and touch pad are the worst I have ever seen. 

Stay away. Spend 100$ more for a real low-end laptop and you won’t regret it.

Fantastic! except..

ok, this is a fine netbook. The typical netbook spec (1.6 atom cpu, integrated graphics, 1gb ram…), 
which is same as most more expensive netbooks (with large sata hard drives). 
runs most streaming videos flawlessly, (hulu, HQ on youtube, though not HD…) 
and even 720p HD videos (not streaming 720p, due to software limitations by flash). 

but this specific version of Aspire One, (Acer Aspire One AOA110) use a very slow SSD. 
this specific SSD’s write speed is very slow, with random pauses during extensive use. 
Its low write speed slows down nearly everything, even web surfing. 

you can replace SSD with… a real SSD (1.8″ zif), or a 1.8″ pata zif hard drives. 
if you’re thinking of buying this, only do so if this is much cheaper than the hard drive version.

Like This Netbook, But Needs A Better Recovery Plot

When I bought one of these netbooks they are fantastic. When I got it out of the box I was ready to play with it. After 2 days it worked fantastic. When I downloaded Software Informer it said that my HD audio driver was out of date so I downloaded a new update. After a system restart 
I started getting this real terrible fatal error called /system32/hal.dll missing error. The terrible thing about this is that my netbook started to break, so I tried to hunt around for the built in recovery software. Get this! It did not HAVE ANY recovery software!! So I was sad and very upset and did not know how to reinstall a copy of a missing file. Then I had no choice but to install Ubuntu 9.04 linux OS until I get the “erecovery” CD-ROM I need to bring the netbook up to specifications and also install ubuntu along with it. Please remember this, when you first boot up after out of the box try to make a recovery CD-ROM if not available buy one of them. Acer needs to wake up and realize that all of their netbooks need a recovery partition because when you are outside and the PC starts crashing how are you supposed to fix it. And as a bonus Acer should include Ubuntu software for advantages and more educational computing experience, especially for the students and emergency computing.

Acer Aspire One AOA110-1995 is sloooow.

Got this Acer netbook to use mostly for email and internet. Granted, my satellite internet service is already slower than broadband, but the Acer is way slower than my regular laptop online. Maybe it’s the particular model, with only 2.5 hourse of battery life. But I wouldn’t buy it again.

Aspire One and Games

I’ve installed a wide variety of applications and games onto the Aspire One to see how it holds up. Overall the Netbook handles the applications I’ve tried very well as seen at my review page at [...]. But, applications requiring specialized video cards won’t run successfully although I still try and report which applications do fail to run.

fantastic for grade school. (6,7,8)

this product is fantastic for school use. I got it in 6th grade and have used it for 2 years. it is fantastic because it basicly supports spreadsheets internet,slideshows,word documents! fantastic for basic use. my mom said i was to young for a labtop and thought she would regret ordering one. but ounce it came she liked the thought of its simplicity.she said that because it took like 15 minutes to set up! a fantastic first labtop!

Bought the Acer Netbook, it works fine, a bit sluggish on the web access but acceptable. 

The main value is its size and functionality for web apps, support for office, general simple of use. 

If there was an option to include more (factory installed) memory for a performance upgrade, I would buy it. This machine, while adequate, is not close to a regular laptop. The question is: Would the memory upgrade give it a performance pop, or are there other technology throttles in the system, such as the disk drive? Secondly, a number of people have commented on removing the bloatware installed on the machine, it would be fantastic to have a specific list of what can be removed, some utilities appear to provide critical functionality. 
The other concern is the keyboard, on a scale of 1-10, I would give it a 7 for comfort and positioning with other keyboards. 

Overall, the Acer is a excellent value.

Ive heard so many things about,Lap tops and Netbooks and well I really dont know much, so I did some research on the products and becaues of the reviews on this Acer I chose to take a chance, Wonderful I like it, my battery lasts a excellent 3 hours, keys are simple to touch and find,some reviews said they have a few problems like having to push hard on the keys, Im having no problems at all, screen is bright and colorfulmy only problem is the key board does not lite up, I bought a lite up keyboard for my home PC and I like it, bought that from Amazon too, Now if this Acer Keyboard lits up then Ill have to redo my review but as of this time I dont see how it would lite up..This is my first Netbook and I truly like it, if I could use 2 at a time Id buy another one, as is Im running my Home PC and this one at the same time, I write at night..

this is the 1st laptop type computer i have owned. 
I travel for my business and I thought I get it to check e mails and skype with my family and this machine does it smoothly and quickly. 
I like the light weight and compact size . 
It does come with some other software like Microsoft works and some games that I have not used yet. 
I loaded it with my wma music files with a 8 gig thumb drive and it loaded quickly. 
all in all a nice buy!!!

Delightfully Simple To Use Netbook

After a terrible experience with an Asus with 9 inch screen and solid state drive (very hard to type on and VERY slow operation) I was quite reluctant to try another netbook but this one was on sale so I went ahead. What I have is the e-machines version which is made by Acer and is identical to the Aspire one. 
With an Atom N270 running at 1.6 Ghz it does get rather warm but not unbearable and the speed is well worth it. With few exceptions it runs as quick as my full size laptop and is very enjoyable to surf the web on. The Windows 7 starter is a perfect match for this machine and pleasingly simple with loads of widgets to customize the home screen and desktop endlessly. Oddly Windows 7 starter won’t play DVD’s as MS wants . for the Windows 7 Home Edition that will. Not a real problem as I can get a DVD player for much less than . if I want to watch movies on a proper hdtv screen. 
I’ve found that a 93% keyboard as found on 10 inch netbooks is the perfect size. Just large enough for comfortable typing while keeping the machine as small and lightweight as possible. I’ve investigated a fantastic many more expensive netbooks but this one is really sufficient for all I do and a bargain to boot.

I bought it for my sister but I set it up before reshipping it to her. Instructions were simple and to the point. But, the instructions did not take into consideration the new System 7 Start Up software. But, I had no problems getting it registered and up and running wirelessly. The own screen instructions made up for the lack of written instructions. But it would have been nice to have a back up written set of instructions that the online instructions provided. All in all a very excellent product.

Best Bang for the buck!

I bought this notebook to run my GPS and listen to music. It’s small package belies the brilliant keyboard and screen! 
I also use it to operate my portable Oscilloscope. This is an brilliant notebook! BUY ONE! You won’t be disappointed! If I turn off the wireless I can read an ebook for nearly 2 hours. So battery life is brilliant. On long road trips it’s indispensable.

Very Satisfying Netbook

I recently bought this netbook for cross-country travel on my motorcycle. I wasn’t expecting much, just the basics. But after getting it setup and using it for a while, I can honestly say I won’t be traveling anywhere without it. Plus my teenage daughter determined that the copper color is “cool.” 

First impressions… this thing is small. And very silent. And the screen is bright and simple to read at 1024×600. And the keyboard isn’t too small (I’m a 6’1″ guy with large hands). And the touchpad works fine if you don’t have a usb mouse handy. But the system works even better with a Logitech V220 notebook mouse. 

Then I noticed that the Aspire One worked fine when powered by the adapter, but very slowly when powered solely by the battery. A quick trip to the Control Panel/Power Options enabled me to change the power management functions to Always On. I then went to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager and changed the Power Save Mode for the network adapters to Off. It no longer runs slowly under battery power… and the battery should still last for more than 2 hours. I am plotting on buying a 6-cell battery but, just for more battery time. 

Next, I removed Google desktop, McAfee antivirus, the trial version of Microsoft Office 2007, and various Windows programs/utilities I don’t use (Outlook Express, etc). Then, after downloading and installing Avast Antivirus 4, I downloaded Mozilla Firefox to replace Internet Explorer (which was then erased as well). Then Open Office 3 and Mozilla Thunderbird were downloaded and installed. Out of the original 8Gb of internal SSD space, I now have over 3Gb of free space. And the additional 8Gb SSD (my system is advertised as having 16Gb total SSD storage space) is completely free. So the 16Gb of SSD storage is plenty for my uses, and I can still run all of my Microsoft Office 2002 Word and Excel files on Open Office. 

Suggestion – in addition to the V220 mouse, get the CaseCrown travel case with the front pouch. You’ll need the additional space to hold the power adapter and cords, an RJ45 cable (for when the hotel doesn’t have wireless internet), and mouse. 

After years of buying stuff on Amazon, this was my first review. I guess it took a product this excellent to finally get me off my duff and contribute.
