Will the ATI Raedon HD 4650 1GB work on my Sony Vaio desktop (PCV-RS226) which has 512mb ram. I am also plotting to upgrade the ram to 2 GB if the videocard works with my PC.

From the research i did i reckon i have found that it will not work.
It seems your motherboard does not have a pci-e slot.
This PCI-E is needed for modern video cards

this says

it does not mention a pci-e slot.

You can replace the nVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 with an AGP HD 4650 model if you can find a better power supply to fit your case.

Im guessing the 4650 is PCI express, make sure you have a pci express slot. Also it may need a 6 pin power connector, so make sure (if it is) you have one hanging off your psu.
