Why Will My Hp Pavilion Laptop Not Start Up?

HP pavilion laptop (dv2000) with Vista shows only black screen when turned on and makes a noise like a CD spinning – but no CD in drive. Could not shut down using task manager or any method other than manual shut-down. I have tried to restart 3 times but same response. Any suggestions?

Okay, so yeah, rule out that the battery is charged. Are the blue lights turning on? The noise may be the harddrive spinning. If there are absolutely no logos coming on at startup you may have one (or more) of several issues going on.
You can try taking out the battery…have the laptop plugged into the power cord(also plugged in to the wall) and hold down the power button for like 5 seconds..this is supposed to do a sort of soft reset. If that doesnt work it may be
    a. a dead mother board
    b. if initial logos appear and then spinning noises but doesnt boot windown- a terrible hard drive
    c. sometimes the backlight on the laptops just fails. It is really hard to see the graphics without the backlight but if you look closely you see the images loading and such.
with either problems a or b its pretty expensive to pay out of pocket. Only excellent if you have a service or warranty to cover the cost of repairs. for b. its is still a small expensive if you need to have someone else do the work for you

make sure that it is not set to boot from cd drive. since the drive is spinning maybe the computer thinks that as soon as u turn it on that it should play directly from cd drive.

Make sure your laptop is fully charged because i recently bought a HP laptop and it refused to start up. Turns out i only had 5% battery left ! :)
