I recently received a second-hand laptop that doesn’t have a modem. I’ve never bought a modem apart from a computer, so please help me out here.
It’s a Dell Latitude CPX running on XP.
It says it had installed a XJ-CC5560 56K Data Fax Full-Duplex Voice modem.
I’m on dial-up now but hope to switch to DSL soon.
How do I find a modem for it? Please help. Thank you.

Hi you would need a PCMCIA MODEM card or for broadband you would need a PCMCIA Network card and a adsl modem usually supplied by your ISP (Internet service provider)
you don’t need a modem. either you use your dial-up connection, then the internal modem will do it or in case you switch to dsl, then you need a pcmcia to ethernet adapter (and a RJ45-RJ45 patch cable).http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
Ok, I will try to place this in simple, non-technical terms…
Linksys. I have used it for three years. You can use it by putting it in one of your card slots (usually on left). Then link it up to a main router. A router is one of those box thing the zine of 1/4 of a tissue box with has blink lights and a cable coming into it and going out to the ehternet port of your Dell. But this is for cable modems. You should use Cable instead of DSL. Nearly the same price, but a lot reliable and does not use a phone like. Because DSL is basically super dail-up.
I know you questioned 2 questions but I have 3 answers
1. if you have a XJ-CC5560 56K Data Fax Full-Duplex Voice modem you are all set to use dial-up.
2. To connect to Dsl you can use PCMCIA (small like stack of 10 credit card size) Network card. ( anice pic of a card like this http://www.bixnet.com/10mbinporpcm.html – i don’t know the brand)
3. Wireless – get a simple wireless router and a usb or pcmcia wireless card. and connect without wires. (d-link, belkin, linksys or others will do the trick) try to get a,b,g standards together.
the dsl modem will most probably will come from the dsl provider
