Dell Latitude C600 Fan -how To Tell If I Need A New One?

I have noticed that my Dell Latitude C600 gets very hot when left on for a long time. I have not noticed the fan running at all. Does this mean that I need a new fan? Is there something incorrect with the motherboard? A lot of websites that Dell’s just run hot anyways. I really want to sell it but the buyer won’t buy unless the fan is fixed. Will a new fan fix the problem or it something else?

Dell fans are usually very silent, so you won’t hear much.
Place you fingers right next to the fan (see picture). You should feel air flow if the fan is running normally. If the fan is dead, it should be relative simple to replace it (see the link – Dell provides brilliant part replacement instructions).
Latitude C600 is Pentium III system, so it’s normal for it to be pretty hot, unlike Centrinos.

It is possible that dust is clogging the cooling path, or the fan may be broken. It’s not your motherboard. Unless you are experienced with laptop disassemly, you should probably take it to a shop. I changed the fan assembly on my wife’s laptop, and found I had to nearly completely disassemble the laptop to do it.

Fans are cheap, buy a new one and install it. it should help with the heat.
