You didn't specify the exact model number so I guess the processor is either a Pentium II or Pentium III. Although old, they're still good enough for internet and school work.
As for gaming, they can't do much in a modern sense. Not sure if it would even handle something as old as Sims 2. However it can run classics such as StarCraft or Diablo and can do SNES emulation fine.
Not sure if Wifi was standard on laptops before 2000 so you might have to get a wifi USB or PC card adapter.

Comment on How Computer Ram Memory Works by Douglas S

The basics of computer memory are predicated on the capability of a microprocessor to repeatedly store and read data. To provide this capability a system using addresses was invented. Whenever the address bus of early microprocessors was set to a particular range of addresses, the design assured that memory would be written to, or read from, by the microprocessor.
For a variety of reasons, (speed, mechanical reliability, etc.) the use of hard disk space for memory was defined rather early as a weakness in system design. Short term memory was required for computation capacity and speed. At that point, two varieties of memory were introduced into computers; RAM and Hard Drive. RAM (Random Access Memory) would be used for storing values temporarily, and Hard Drive would be used to store more permanent data onto a magnetic format disk. Different addresses would be used for each, so that no conflicts would occur. As time moved on, more memory requirements and transportability needs led to the development of CD-ROM and DVD formats for storing data. The process remains the same as it originally did, although the size, speed, and content have evolved dramatically. Data from the microprocessor is sent to an address, where it is stored until the microprocessor needs to read it again.
