I’ve been considering buying a used laptop to run Linux on. What brands should I look OUT for and avoid buying?
I would suggest avoiding laptops from Acer, Gateway and HP.

The printer was bought for a laptop but never used. There are 2 cables, like my other HP deskjets, one USB and the other which SHOULD plug into an electrical outlet (if it was for a desktop PC). This part certainly does not plug into an electrical outlet, I guess it has something to do with the laptop. I am wondering if there is a universal type cable that could be used to plug in to this printer and an electrical outlet? (converting the printer into one that could be used on my desktop PC?) Thanks for your help!
The one plug is for the USB connector the second one is for the 30 volt power supply that plugs into the wall

Sneak Peek
The Asus F5R is a new notebook with 15.4″ screen which is targeted at buyers with a limited budget. The notebook comes in a simple silver and black design that you will find common with generally used laptops. The notebook offers the essentials of what customers are focusing for within their means.
Design
The size of the laptop is 14.4″ length x 10.3″ width, 1.1″/1.4″ height (front/back) and it weighs around 2.7 kgs with the 6 cell battery. When you lift up the laptop, it will feel very light in your hands. It is also thinner than other notebooks in the market these days. The notebook is very handy and can be easily carried anywhere.
Core Information
The keyboard is of a gorgeous black color with white lettering which has a touch of grey. Though the keys on the keyboard are pretty small, they are properly placed. The keys do make a sound when pushed, but still you can feel free to use the laptop in a crowded place without disturbing anyone. There is a reasonable amount of contract on the entire notebook, it will not hinder anyone’s capability to type and use the keyboard. On the whole, the keyboard is satisfactory.
Even after several hours of use, the laptop remains cool enough. At times only the touchpad gets warm. On the noise front too the notebook is on the minimal. The only thing of concern is the Core Duo processor which is quite outdated in terms of the existing technology and speed. Unfortunately there is also no real gaming prospective.
Cutting Edge Technology
Asus F5R Notebook comes with an in built webcam and it also has Wi-Fi. The swiveling webcam is of 1.3 megapixel. It also provides a program called LifeFrame2 which is used with the webcam. For the Wi-Fi there is a toggle switch which is situated at the left side of the laptop. The connectivity is very strong as it maintains a strong signal even when went in the lift. The sound system of the notebook is excellent though it lacks the bass surround system. The quality of the treble is excellent and the speakers are loud enough for individual use. When using Headphones and ear buds the sound quality is brilliant just as expected.
Conclusion
The Asus Laptops fulfills the basic needs of a mainstream use of a notebook. Though the weak battery life and older Core Duo processor makes it a bit outdated.

The word sub miniature is a term most commonly used with electrical devices like cameras or electrical connectors used in computers like RF connectors or circular connectors available on the market today. An electrical connector is in fact a conductive device allowing joining electrical circuit to each other whether it is temporary like when using a portable device or permanent when it is between wires or devices.
Those sub miniature connectors tend to be used usually to provide some mechanical support and screening really against what we call electromagnetic interferences. Electromagnetic interferences are simply unwanted disturbances that will affect the electrical circuit and need to be stopped or they would hurt or restrict the performance of the device involved. The best example is when using a radio transmitter or cable television.
Those connectors that differ from RF connectors or circular connectors tend to be in fact in a D shape. The D shape sub miniature connectors were first invented at the beginning of the fifties by a company called ITT Cannon and is now used a lot in personal computers and laptops. We had to wait later to get the screws on each side of the connector to make it work better.
Those connectors are also used a lot in communications.
On top of those sub miniature connector that have that particular shape, you can also find sub miniature circular connectors, binders and different other elements involved in the built of a computer or any other thing.
Binders, as you may have already guessed it are another type of connectors different as well from RF connectors and circular connectors, and you can even find some that will be waterproof.
Co axial products are also very often used whether they are semi rigid or completely rigid. They are really mainly used as transmission line for radio frequency signals in the every day life or in military use. You can now find very high performance cables for various applications from test and measurement to military or space flights.
In the end there are plenty of different types of connectors which will be all adapted and made for a specific use whether it is for a computer or if it is to be place inside any other electrical device. You will find though that for connectors like circular connectors or RF connectors that there are a lot of different manufacturers to choose from when buying this element.
