Microsoft (MSFT) and Toshiba are delivering the hardware and software technology necessary for using DVD players and discs on Windows 98, setting the stage for an expected mass movement to these next-generation storage devices.
The DVD support is now being included in beta 3 of Windows 98,Toshiba Laptop Battery according to the two companies. Microsoft made the latest preliminary release of Windows 98 available to testers this week.

DVD-ROM drives, which are expected to be the catalyst for the “convergence” of consumer electronics and PCs, can play back titles but can not record. DVD-RAM drives, due in 1998, will be able to both play back and record.

DVD drives can hold up to ten times more data than CD-ROM drives and, for example, enable the viewing of high-resolution movies on a PC.

But for all the benefits the technology brings to users, the drives and titles for them have been slow in coming. One reason: PC vendors that ship a system with a DVD drive have to install special software that understands what the DVD drive is playing and knows how to control the underlying system hardware. When the drive is shipped in a different computer, the underlying software often has to be rewritten.

Commercial programs such as games and multimedia encyclopedias also have to be rewritten to ensure compatibility,Toshiba Satellite A10 Series Battery, Toshiba Satellite A100 Battery, Toshiba Satellite A70 Battery, something which quickly becomes an expensive and arduous process for programmers. The result is that programmers have been slow to adopt DVD as the platform of choice for writing new programs.

“From Microsoft’s standpoint, it’s [DVD support] a necessity to sell [Windows 98]. They’re not going to get far if they don’t include it,” said Mark Hardie, senior analyst with Forrester Research.

With the weight of Microsoft behind DVD, Forrester predicts an installed base of 53 million DVD drives in PCs by the year 2002, while only 5.2 percent of households in the U.S. will own a standalone (non-PC) DVD-Video player.

DVD support in Windows 98 includes DVD navigation and playback applications, a data streaming architecture, and support in Microsoft’s DirectX set of technologies for video playback.

Toshiba says it helped Microsoft build support for DVD navigation and is providing technologies to Microsoft, including DVD playback technology and a player application. Forrester’s Hardie notes that other drive manufacturers such as Philips and Matsushita will soon follow suit in getting support for their drives added into the operating system.

In related news, Toshiba announced it is offering a circuit board for playback of DVD titles. The circuit board uses Toshiba’s Timpani-I single-chip DVD system processor. This chip was used as a reference design in the Microsoft-Toshiba development process, according to the two companies.

Timpani-I integrates MPEG-2 video technology and hardware-based copy protection processing.

Intel also offers DVD playback technology running off its Pentium II processor. Toshiba Satellite A100 Battery, Unlike Toshiba, Intel’s technology does not require an additional circuit board for playback, but it is not yet suited for use with current Pentium systems because it limits overall system performance. Mediamatics too has software for playing back MPEG-2 video information that taps into the main processor, but also allows use of graphics accelerators for improved playback performance.
IBM today announced new aggressively priced models in its ThinkPad 365 and 760 lines of notebook PCs that may push the company into a knock-down, drag-out fight with market leader Toshiba.
The PCI-bus based 365 line will use 100- and 133-MHz Pentium processors for the first time but maintain pricing comparable that of the current, slower 486 DX4-based 365s. The new 365 models, which start as low as ,000, will carry a Pentium 100- or 120-MHz processor or a Cyrix-designed 5×86 Pentium-class processor.

Moreover, the updated IBM lines boast a number of performance-boosting firsts for the ThinkPad line including a PCI bus and support for 32-bit PC Card technology.

The 365s also include 10.4- or 11.3-inch color LCD screens, integrated quad-speed CD-ROM drives, Toshiba Satellite A10 Series Battery, Toshiba Satellite A100 Battery, Toshiba Satellite A70 Battery,and hard disk drive (HDD) capacities ranging up to 1.08GB.

Macbook MC516LL/A is the latest offering from the Apple for legendary series MacBook pro line. It retains durable polycarbonate unibody design featuring Intel Core 2 duo processor, powerful NVIDIA graphics and upto 10 hrs of battery life. The notebook is suitable for working professional gives seamless access their files, video and music. only 1.08 inch thickness and 2 Kgs weight makes it the best companion for outdoor computing and entertainment needs.

The Apple Macbook MC516LL/A features 13.1 inch LED show and equipped with Intel 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 250 GB hard disk, 2 GB of RAM. The Macbook comes pre-installed with Apple’s latest Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system. This macbook has full size keyboard for optimizing space and key size for comfortable typing. Macbook MC516LL/A has Multi-Touch trackpad with no dedicated button, the trackpad works as a button giving larger space for trackpad navigation.

The white Macbook was updated on May 18 2010. There are minor differences between the 2010 Macbook and 2009′s model, detailed below.

The UPGRADES are

1) Geforce Nvidia 320M integrated graphics processor with 48 processing cores. This is better than the Geforce 9400M in last years model. Useful for content creation.

2)Mini show port now supports video AND audio with a compatible Mini-DP to HDMI adapter. (Last years model only supported video)

Inbuilt battery – (which Apple advertises as capable of lasting between 9 to 10 hours.) Not right. Real world battery life is between 3 to 6 hours depending on what tasks you use your computer for.
Software included is OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and the iLife 09 suite of content creation tools. A 1 year warranty on parts and 90 day telephone technical support is standard.

The Macbook as it is – is excellent for basic computing activities – such as browsing the web, typing articles or watching movies. But, if you’re plotting to buy a Macbook for multimedia work, such as editing high resolution photos or WIFI MINI PCI-E Network Card HD videos and plot to use multiple applications at the same time, please ensure that you upgrade the ram from 2gb to 4gb.

Why?

Because using a macbook with 2 gb of ram (such as this one) to multitask is a Fantastic way to drive yourself crazy as the computer struggles to keep up. Try editing 10 megapixel RAW images while playing music in iTunes with Safari open. 2gb of ram is not at all adequate for multitasking / using processor intensive applications on a Macbook. I know that Apple has to differentiate between the Macbook and MBPro to justify the price differences but skimping on the ram and putting 2gb inside a 9 product and thus, affecting the user experience is not the way to do it.

Upgrading the ram yourself from 2gb to 4gb is a fantastic thought – EXCEPT – the price of DDR3 1066 mhz ram (compatible with Macbook and MB Pro) is still high. Currently, Crucial CT2KIT25664BC1067 4GB 204-PIN PC3-8500 SODIMM DDR3 Memory KIT (2GBx2) costs 1. So that brings your total to 80 (9 MB + 1 Ram) if you upgrade your Macbook’s ram

So for only more than your Macbook, (if you take into account the cost of the ram upgrade) a viable alternative is the standard Apple MacBook Pro MC374LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop which costs 60 on Amazon. The MBP 13 comes with the added benefits of a more durable aluminum unibody, a backlit keyboard, an SD card slot, a firewire 800 port and most importantly, 4gb of ram. Which allows you to multitask effortlessly.

If you’re going to use the Macbook for any computationally demanding activities such as content creation, editing large RAW images or HD videos you should upgrade the ram to 4gb or just buy the standard MBPro 13 inch. The processor and hard drive are the same in both the MB and MBPro 13 ( 2.4 ghz Core 2 duo and 250gb hard drives ) But the 4gb ram will make a huge difference in the daily usage experience.

But, if you only want to use the Macbook for general tasks like writing articles, browsing websites or watching movies, it will handle those duties adequately.

As a student, I was pretty hesitant to get the MacBook, but after MONTHS of exhaustive research looking for the right laptop (I’m a networking student, and also I am working on my A+ PC Repair certification, so I know a thing or two about PC’s and Windows), I chose that I needed a change in my life. I’ve had an IBM ThinkPad T60 last me four years through school, but after 4 re-install’s of XP, I’ve had enough of the constant attacks of viruses, spyware, etc…and I chose to go with the MacBook.

PROS:

Perfect for web browsing, e-mail, and document creation.

Comes with fantastic features right out of the box: iLife simply rocks; it comes with PhotoBooth, Garageband (where you can make your own music or learn to how play an instrument), Preview, and iMovie (it’s basically an simpler version of Windows Movie Maker)

Time Machine for backing up documents and pictures, which is FAR SUPERIOR than using the Backup Feature in Windows.

Wi-Fi is SO Simple to set-up using what Apple calls “Airport”, just go to the wi-fi antenna at the top of the right-hand corner and set-up right there.

Printing: Coming from a Windows world, and living in a household with a wireless network, setting up a printer was a pain in the butt with Windows, with Mac, it’s SO Simple to set-up and start printing.

BlueTooth: BlueTooth is common in all laptops nowadays, and again, like setting up a printer, it basically connects with the BlueTooth device automatically.

MagSafe Adapter: Apple introduced this thought called MagSafe. If someone got caught on your power cord, it would take the cord and not the computer. I can’t tell you how many times my dogs got caught on my IBM power cord and basically nearly took the computer with it.

Battery Life: Wow, what a difference. I was coming from a half-hour IBM thinkpad t43 battery life on my IBM, although Apple says that the battery can last on a 10 hours on a single charge, in the real world, it’s falls under 6 hours, but still this is pretty incredible.

CONS:

2GB of RAM. Now coming from a Windows world, Windows is a memory hogger, so the more RAM you have in a Windows system, you are excellent to go, but with a Mac, it’s different. Now if you are compressing 1080p video on a MacBook, the system starts to hick-up trying to catch-up. My advice? Upgrade to 4GB or get the MacBook Pro.

EXPENSIVE: Like all Apple products, it’s pretty expensive. I was pretty hesitant to buy a MacBook because it was pretty pricey and being a student i.e. poor, I needed to save up a excellent chunk of money to buy one of these machines.

So if you are in the market for a new laptop, only need to do some document making, and web-browsing this Mac is for you. If you want to do some high-end video compression, go with the MacBook Pro since the Pro lines are more aimed at high-end video production. This is certainly a perfect system if all you want is just web-browsing and document creation.
